Rueda Move of the Month (June 26): Guapea

If there is one movement that sits at the very heart of Cuban salsa, it is Guapea.

At first glance, it might look like just a basic step—but in reality, Guapea is much more than that. It is the foundation of Casino, the rhythm that anchors everything else, and the starting point from which connection, expression, and play emerge.

What is Guapea?

Guapea is the basic step of Cuban salsa (Casino), danced in an open position where both partners:

  • Step back and forward in rhythm

  • Maintain a dynamic, elastic connection

  • Stay slightly angled rather than strictly linear

Unlike other salsa styles, Guapea is not rigid—it is alive and responsive.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The word “guapear” in Cuban Spanish carries a deeper cultural meaning. It can mean:

  • To show confidence

  • To carry yourself with style

  • To have a bit of attitude or swagger

So Guapea is not just a step—it’s an attitude.

It’s about how you move, not just where you step.

The Feeling of Guapea

Guapea has a very distinct quality:

  • Elastic → like a gentle push and pull between partners

  • Playful → there’s space for expression and interpretation

  • Grounded → connected to the rhythm and the music

It’s not stiff or mechanical. It breathes.

The Role in Rueda de Casino

In rueda, Guapea is the default state—the place everyone returns to between calls.

Think of it as:👉 The “home base” of the dance

Every move starts from Guapea… and eventually comes back to it.

More Than a Basic Step

As you progress in your Cuban dancing, you start to realise that Guapea is where:

  • Timing is developed

  • Connection is refined

  • Musicality begins

  • Style is expressed

Advanced dancers don’t just do Guapea—they live in it.

Teaching Insight

One of the most important lessons in Cuban salsa is this:

If your Guapea feels good, everything else becomes easier.

It sets the tone for:

  • Leading and following

  • Flow between moves

  • Comfort on the dance floor

Final Thought

Guapea may be the first thing you learn—but it is also the last thing you truly master.

It is simple, but not easy. Basic, but never trivial.

And when it’s done well, it carries everything that makes Cuban salsa what it is: connection, rhythm, and sabor
