Artist Spotlight: Juan Formell & Los Van Van

Founded in Havana in 1969 by bassist, composer and arranger Juan Formell, Los Van Van became one of Cuba’s most influential dance bands. Formell and percussionist José Luis “Changuito” Quintana helped shape songo, combining the roots of Cuban son and charanga with a modern rhythm section and fresh influences from rock, funk and popular music.

The result was music that felt unmistakably Cuban while continually moving forward. Across generations, Los Van Van have remained closely connected to everyday Cuban life: their songs tell stories, use humour and double meanings, and—most importantly—make people want to dance.

Today, the band continues under the leadership of Formell’s son, Samuel Formell, carrying forward a musical legacy that has influenced casino, rueda and timba dancers around the world.
