Japan may not be the first country people associate with salsa, but Orquesta de la Luz—“Orchestra of Light”—became one of the genre’s great international success stories.
Formed in Tokyo in 1984 and fronted by vocalist NORA, the orchestra built its sound through a deep love of salsa. NORA took a demo tape to New York in 1987, and the group began touring there in 1989. Their musicianship, powerful brass arrangements and confident Spanish-language vocals quickly won over audiences far beyond Japan.
Their 1990 debut was released internationally as Salsa Caliente del Japón and reached number one on Billboard’s Latin chart for 11 consecutive weeks. It was a remarkable achievement, but it was more than a novelty. The band earned respect because they treated salsa seriously while bringing their own identity, energy and precision to the music.
Orquesta de la Luz is a perfect reminder that salsa belongs to everyone who approaches it with respect and heart. The musicians came from Japan, sang in Spanish and connected with dancers throughout the Americas and around the world. Different spoken languages; one shared musical language.
