Artist Spotlight: Alexander Abreu

This month, I want to highlight an artist who, for me, represents the very soul of modern Cuban music - Alexander Abreu.

If you’ve been in my classes for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about how important it is not just to dance the steps, but to really listen to the music. And when it comes to music that invites you to listen, feel, and respond… Abreu is right at the top.

🇨🇺 A True Force in Cuban Music

Alexander Abreu is not just an incredible trumpet player, he is a musician who has shaped the sound of contemporary Cuban music through his band, Havana D’Primera.

His music has everything:

• Power

• Emotion

• Complexity

• And that unmistakable Cuban groove

But what I personally love the most is how alive it feels.

A Personal Favourite: “Mi Música”

One of my favourite timba songs is “Mi Música”.

For me, it’s such a great example of what makes timba special: The energy changes, the dynamics, the way the music breathes and evolves. It is not flat, it takes you on a journey.

And then you add the thoughtful lyrics and that unmistakable vibe… it just hits differently. It is the kind of song that makes you want to stop for a second, listen… and then really dance.

Why It Matters for Us as Dancers

When you dance to music like this, something shifts.

You’re not just going through moves—you start to:

• React to breaks

• Play with timing

• Express the music in your own way

That is where the magic happens.

And this is exactly what we try to build in our classes, not just patterns, but connection to the music.
